What a firm but lovely wake-up. This realization is compelling - "There was no waiting for convenience in the pre-modern world; necessity demanded action. "
Fake goals often garner praise giving a quick hit of dopamine without any actual accomplishment. As out of place as corporate speak may be in talk of doing something real, we need to ensure our goals are SMART. Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, and Timely. If it lacks any of these things it is a fake goal.
Great observations at getting to the heart of the problem; modern life afforded us the luxury to be unfulfilled.
Tangible goals, broken up steps to prevent being overwhelmed and routine work have helped me.
I also play a little trick on myself to fight inertia: I outsource my feelings about starting to my future self. In other words, when it’s time to get going, no matter how I feel, I get started. I only let myself decide if I want to stick with it after six minutes in. If after six minutes I’m still not feeling it, then I give myself permission to wait until later. But I have to give it an honest six minutes. Very rarely do stop after those six minutes are up, which indicates to me that initial objections aren’t really to be trusted.

SMART goals are a good way to put it.
Well-said!

This was so powerful and a needed reminder. Thank you for this. I really appreciated the voiceover, I couldn't stop listening.
Gosh, thanks Sam. This is just so kind.
Beautifully stated! Procrastination, with whatever excuses we have, is our enemy. Daylight is wasting.
Off to make ranch dressing and peel cucumbers for dinner.
Dinner counts as making something real.
Sure does! With homemade sub sandwiches, carrot sticks, cucumbers and two dressings I made today. Real food with our kids is nourishing to the soul.
Great admonition to quiet the noise within us. Not an easy ask. Keep writing.
